Monday: The Victorians, Death and Mourning
We’ll explore the cultural context of the ghost story with an overview of Victorian society’s complex relationship with death, memory, and the afterlife. Practices such as spiritualism and its intersection with art and portraiture will be discussed. We’ll round off our first session with a discussion of two ‘haunted portrait’ stories.
Tuesday: Artists and Models
Artists and models often had complex relationships, providing rich fodder for ghost-story writers. Building on our discussion of spiritualism, we’ll delve deeper into aspects of Victorian painting and portraiture, focusing on the work of poet and painter Dante Gabriel Rossetti. We’ll then turn our discussion to a selection of stories that focus on artists and models, beginning with one that draws inspiration from Rossetti’s life and work.
Wednesday: Enduring Love
The ghost story was a means of exploring the eternal nature of love, with the haunted portrait often serving as a gateway between the spirit and material worlds. In this session we’ll explore portraiture associated with love and longing, such as miniatures and memorial (post-mortem) photography. The ghost stories we’ll discuss likewise explore love that endures beyond death.
Thursday: Field trip
We’ll travel to London to visit the College of Psychic Studies and its collection of spirit art, images that artist-mediums believed flowed directly from the spirit world. We’ll also visit the National Portrait Gallery to get a better understanding of portraiture and how it may have inspired ghost-story authors.
Friday: Something Wicked This Way Comes
In this final session, we’ll consider the sinister side of the haunted portrait, with stories focused on immorality, retribution, and the triumph of justice (or not), along with portraiture that supports these themes. We’ll close by sharing and discussing portraits we find particularly haunting.
