Supporting postgraduate study
Short courses and training for graduates and postgraduate researchers
The Graduate School facilitates a stimulating and enriching learning and research environment for both internal and external graduate students and postgraduate researchers. Our programme of training and development activities is designed to help students conduct their research whilst facilitating them to becoming independent researchers.

As well as our training sessions for Oxford University students, listed below, we also run training sessions and courses open to external students, research fellows and postgrads.
Accredited short courses
The following short courses can be taken for credit and discounted rates are available for students (including those external to Oxford University):
- Mixed methods research in social sciences
- The secret life of research interviewing
- Digital ethnography
If a course is closed to new enrolments, please sign up to the waiting list or subscribe to our emails.
New research skills training sessions
In line with the Department's mission and values, one of our goals is to broaden access to researcher training by enabling and encouraging participation from those outside of the University. In 2024 we launched a trial series of research skills sessions open to postgraduate researchers external to the University and, due to the sucess of these, the sessions have been expanded for spring 2025.
These hybrid sessions are primarily aimed at doctoral students but all postgraduate researchers external to the University are welcome to attend.
Each session is independent of each other and can be applied for separately, although a fee reduction of 20% is available for anyone applying for all five sessions (£300 instead of £375 if booked individually).
All sessions can be attended either in Oxford or online.
Training for Oxford Uni students
As a graduate student at the University of Oxford you become a member of one of the most highly regarded educational and research institutions in the world. The Graduate School will help you make the most of the wealth of resources and opportunities available, drawing on our extensive experience in supporting graduate study.
Although primarily intended for research students, sessions are open to postgraduate taught students where the content is considered appropriate. Postgraduate students at the University outside of the Department are also welcome to attend any of our sessions to complement their own divisional or departmental research training programmes.
See our Graduate School training events to explore and register for upcoming sessions.
Additional training is also available through other departments, divisions and services around the University such as the IT Learning Centre and the Bodleian Library. Through the IT Learning Centre you also have access to a huge library of online and video based courses provided through LinkedIn Learning.
