This course will introduce you to identifying and understanding an array of common archaeological artifacts using comparative collections and online resources. You will be introduced to prehistoric through modern stone, ceramic, metal and other materials which have been used to manufacture artefacts. You will be given guidance on identification of materials, types, and dates of artefacts, as well as how archaeologists interpret the production and uses of these items. This course will be suitable for those of you with some archaeology coursework experience, as well as those who are interested in practical archaeology.
The course is seminar based. You will be exposed to handling artefacts in practical sessions, develop your knowledge of museum-based exhibitions, and practice recording artefacts and presenting your findings in the classroom activities.
This course is part of the Oxford University Summer School for Adults (OUSSA) programme.
