Significant technological developments took place in Africa between 2 and 1.5 million years ago, including the emergence of new tools such as handaxes. This day school explores the stone and other technologies of this key period of the African stone age.
For most of our existence as a species, we have shared the world with other kinds of human, including Neanderthals, Denisovans, and Homo naledi. This course explores the diverse range of human species that overlapped, and sometimes even interbred with us.
Our stone age ancestors have left us a rich legacy of cave art and ornamental objects. This introductory course explores Palaeolithic art from its earliest beginnings to the spectacular artworks created by Upper Palaeolithic modern humans.
