Glenn Richardson
Glenn Richardson is Professor of Early-Modern History at St Mary’s University, Twickenham in London. He is the author of several books on Renaissance monarchs, on and on late-medieval and Renaissance international relations. His most recent book was Wolsey (2020) and he is currently working on a biography of Francis I of France, and a book on the battle of Pavia in 1525. He has taught many OUDCE courses on aspects of the Renaissance and the monarchies of England, France and related topics.

2025 is the 500th anniversary of the Battle of Pavia, in which armies from five different European states clashed and the king of France was captured. This course examine how and why it was the most important European land battle of the sixteenth century.
2025 marks 500 years from the Battle of Pavia, at which Francis I of France was captured on the field. Examine Francis I as king, the reasons he was at war in 1525, and his recovery to become one of the most important kings of the European Renaissance.
500 years ago, Cardinal Wolsey founded what became Christ Church. This course examines Wolsey’s life and career and the development of Henry VIII’s kingship: the rise of the cardinal, the breadth of his responsibilities, and why he fell from power.
