Biography
Pedro Marques is a Departmental Lecturer for the Master's in Sustainable Urban Development at the University of Oxford. He is also a research fellow at INGENIO, a research centre in Valencia (Spain) affiliated to the Spanish National Research Council. Previously he has held academic positions at the University of Sussex, Cardiff University, University of Kiel and Newcastle University. He has research interests in regional development, politics and development, inequality, and innovation.
He has a PhD in Economic Geography and a MA in Regional Development from the Centre for Urban and Regional Development Studies, at Newcastle University, where he has been a Visiting Fellow since 2012. He has a BA in Sociology from ISCTE-IUL, in Lisbon (Portugal).
Research and teaching
Pedro Marques has done empirical research in the UK, Portugal, Spain, Germany, Slovenia and Italy, with a specific focus on the development trajectories of less developed European regions. He has examined the importance of innovation, institutions, public policy and political processes in explaining these trajectories and has sought to improve our understanding of territorial inequalities.
Pedro has also worked with policymakers and other stakeholders at the national and regional level in countries such as the UK, Spain and Portugal, and at the international level with the European Commission, and the OECD. His goal is to contribute to policymaking that that can help achieve better development outcomes in lagging territories.
