Over five thousand years ago, on the fertile plains of Southern Mesopotamia (modern Iraq), the Sumerians founded one of the world’s first civilisations. One that lies at the root of our own urban, literate and globalised world.
Here, in the land of Sumer, they developed the earliest known system of writing, built vast cities characterised by monumental architecture, established richly furnished temples to receive the blessing of their gods, formed armies to battle for control of land and water, and sought exotic materials from distant lands, along trade routes that stretched from Egypt in the west to Afghanistan in the east.
Using a combination of archaeology and textual sources, along with videos that provide unique access to collections housed in the Ashmolean Museum, this course will provide you with an introduction to Ancient Mesopotamia and the Sumerians.
