Napoleon Bonaparte was one of the most important figures in European and world history in the early-nineteenth century.
His impact politically, socially and economically in his lifetime was enormous and his legacy created legal and administrative structures which still exist today. He was also an authoritarian ruler who crushed all dissent in France and who pursued long and bloody wars with the major powers of Europe leaving destruction and violence across the continent.
We will consider this controversial figure’s complicated story and assess his importance in the past and his significance in the modern world.
