Reacting against the empty display of variations by the virtuosi of his day, Mendelssohn wrote his Variations sérieuses as a homage to Beethoven. Basing the variations on a poignant chromatic theme, Mendelssohn explores a wide range of moods, ending in a jubilant finale.
