The inclusivity of mathematics as a discipline is a complex and evolving topic. Historically, mathematics has been perceived as a field dominated by certain demographics, leading to underrepresentation and marginalization of minorities, including women, people of colour, and individuals from low-income backgrounds.
However, Mathematics, as a collective human endeavour, is built upon contributions from diverse cultures, movements, and societies globally and throughout history. Moreover, it could exemplify episodes that we may describe as 'progressive' and 'inclusive.'
We will investigate how and why mathematics has progressed over time due to the efforts of many individuals, while also reflecting on the potential lack of representation of the full spectrum of human diversity in terms of backgrounds, perspectives and contributions. We will explore the issue of inclusivity within the field, considering past and present contributions from various backgrounds and historical figures. Finally, we will discuss strategies, regulations and the benefits of recognizing diverse voices and experiences in mathematical discourse and practice.
This event will close to enrolments at 23:59 BST on 7 May 2025.
