Developing Further Assignment Writing Skills

Overview

A workshop for experienced essay and report writers who would like to improve the effectiveness, style and structure of their writing and to develop the technique of persuasive argument.

Individually, and then in small groups, we will examine how to successfully ‘unpack a question’ before deciding how to plan our approach in answering it. We will consider the importance of a clear introduction or thesis (topic) statement. We will look at examples of improving the fluidity of our writing style and the importance of always bearing our reader in mind.

Avoiding plagiarism in an assignment is critical and we will discuss various ways of successfully referencing our research and providing supporting evidence in the development of our argument. We will have the chance to read through and discuss examples of assignments which have received different grades.

This workshop would suit students who have already mastered basic planning and writing skills.

This event will close for enrolment at 23:59 UTC on 19 March 2025.

Tutor

Mrs Anne West

Anne West has been teaching Study Skills at OUDCE, both face-to-face and online, for over 10 years. The thought of spending a day with students teaching spelling, punctuation, grammar or any other aspect of written English fills her with joy. She believes that a piece of writing, at whatever level, deserves to be written and read, as clearly as possible, to give pleasure and satisfaction to both writer and recipient – and also to save a lot of time for both.

She’s also been involved with writing and editing for the BBC – children’s radio and TV.
