Ethics, the philosophical study of morality, answers questions and give reasons for: what ought I do/be? We will look at Bioethics, a subfield of ethics, that explores ethical questions related to life sciences. It will help develop models of good practice.
Whereas biomedical/scientific advancements are giving humans new capacities and lead to cures for many diseases their application in the real world raises concerns about the moral ramifications of their use. Building on the philosophical foundations of ethics, we will explore a wide range of ethical issues related to end-of-life, organ donation, allocation of scarce resources, AI, Artificial reproduction, genetic modification.
We will also engage with the established medical and research practices and discuss the doctor-patient relationship and whether, confidentiality, decision-making and consent should be solely the domain of an individual. We will also discuss, albeit briefly empirical ethics.
