In-person week: Introduction to Ecological Survey Techniques

Experience ecology in action: Five days in Oxford
As part of the Postgraduate Certificate in Ecological Survey Techniques, students spend an immersive five days in Oxford for the Introduction to Ecological Survey Techniques in-person week. Held in early September, the week combines classroom learning with hands-on fieldwork, including two days at Wytham Woods – Oxford’s ‘living laboratory.’ You'll engage in activities such as:
-
Using GPS for field navigation
-
Bird netting and ringing
-
Surveying bats and vegetation
By the end of the week, you'll have:
- A practical introduction to Geographical Information Systems (GIS);
- An overview of approaches to plant and animal identification;
- An introduction to selected surveying techniques;
- An introduction to University facilities and resources;
- And an overview of the Field Project.
The week concludes with a formative (non-credit) assessment to consolidate your learning.
This intensive week is a fundamental part of the Postgraduate Certificate and a unique opportunity to develop essential field skills while connecting with fellow students and expert tutors in one of the world’s most renowned academic settings.
