Applying for a research degree

If you are interested in undertaking a research degree at the Department for Continuing Education we strongly recommend that you contact the Director of Studies or Programme Director to discuss your plans, objectives and research interests before you submit a formal application. This will enable you to fine-tune your proposed research project, check that a suitable supervisor can be identified and clarify the entry requirements for the programme.

For subjects not related to our existing DPhils, we suggest that you contact a University lecturer at the Department with relevant interests. It is advisable that a supervisor is identified before your application is submitted.

All DPhil applicants are required to submit a preliminary research proposal with their application. The purpose of the proposal is to demonstrate that the research topic you propose to undertake is significant, necessary and feasible, that you will be able to make an original contribution to the field, and that the project can be within the expected time period.

Full details of the application process and the supporting materials required are provided in the University of Oxford Graduate Admissions online Course Guide and Application Guide. If you require any assistance with your application, please contact the appropriate Programme Assistant or Graduate Admissions.
