Seminars
Participants are taught in small seminar groups of up to 12 students, and receive two one-on-one tutorials with their tutor.

Seminar 1: Exploring the context of Aristotle’s philosophical thinking
Seminar 2: Aiming at what is most valuable: the good (NE I / EE I)
Monday
Seminar 3: How to think of excellence and perfection: virtue (NE II / EE II.1–6)
Seminar 4: Ways of excellent living: the virtues (NE III.6–12 and NE IV / EE III)
Tuesday
Seminar 5: How to will and to choose actions: decisions (NE III.1–5 / EE II.6–11)
Seminar 6: The many faces of fairness: justice (NE V = EE IV)
Wednesday
Seminar 7: The many faces of fairness: justice (NE V = EE IV)
Seminar 8: When agency breaks down: weakness of will (NE VII.1–10 = EE VI.1–10)
Thursday
Seminar 9: The ethical roles of pleasure and pain (NE VII.11–14 = EE.VI.11–14 and NE X.1–5)
Seminar 10: Lessons in love, affection, and friendship (NE VIII–IX / EE VII)
Friday
Seminar 11: The end, again: happiness and the good life (NE X.6–9 / EE VIII)
Seminar 12: Reviewing and looking over Aristotle’s ethics
Programme timetable
The daily timetable will normally be as follows:
Saturdays
14.00–16.30 - Registration
16.30–17.00 - Orientation meeting
17.00–17.30 - Classroom orientation for tutor and students
17.30–18.00 - Drinks reception
18.00–20.00 - Welcome dinner
Sundays – Fridays
09.00–10.30 - Seminar
10.30–11.00 - Tea/coffee break
11.00–12.30 - Seminar
12.30–13.30 - Lunch
13.30–18.00 - Afternoons are free for tutorials, individual study, course-related field trips or exploring the many places of interest in and around Oxford.
18.00–19.00 - Dinner (There is a formal gala dinner every Friday to close each week of the programme)
A range of optional social events will be offered throughout the summer school. These are likely to include: a quiz night, visit to historic pubs in Oxford, visit to Christ Church for Evensong and after-dinner talks and discussions.
