Annual colloquium
For postgraduate students and those working in higher education.
The colloquium is a forum for postgraduate students and higher education administrators and academics to share their perspectives on and experiences of current research ethics issues, with emphasis on the everchanging landscape of AI in lifelong learning.
The event is open to those both within and outside of the University of Oxford with an interest in research ethics within academia and can be attended either in person at Rewley House in central Oxford or online.
We hosted our second annual Research Ethics Colloquium on Friday 13 June 2025 and hope to run this again in 2026.

Who is the colloquium for?
Following the success of its inaugural research ethics colloquium in 2024, the Department opened the 2025 colloquium to both internal (Oxford University staff and students) and external (those not affiliated with Oxford University) delegates. This includes postgraduate students and higher education administrators, academics and other staff members.
Please note that the colloqium is not aimed at undergraduate students.

If you are interested in attending the 2026 colloquium, please register your interest by signing up to the waiting list. You will then be contacted when details of the 2026 colloquium are announced.
Attendance options
Join us in Oxford or online
The 2025 colloquium took place in a hybrid format, with speakers and attendees invited to join either in person at Rewley House in central Oxford or online, and we expect to run the next colloquium in the same format.
Please note that the 2025 colloquium was not recorded.
Are there fees to attend?
Please note: the fees outlined below were for our 2025 colloquium and may be subject to change for 2026.
The fee is the same for both online and in-person attendance, and this fee will be waived for all those speaking at the event. Lunch is included for those attending in person.
Internal delegates: Free
Individual associated with the University of Oxford (postgraduate student, administrator, academic, other staff member).
External students: £50.00
Individual with postgraduate student status at a university other than the University of Oxford. Proof of affiliation may be required during registration.
External non-students: £100.00
Individual with an interest in Higher Education research ethics possessing neither an affiliation to the University of Oxford nor student status at another institution.

Meet the team
Research Ethics at the Department
Joanna Smith
Administrative Officer (Research Ethics and Postgraduate Programme Support)
Joanna's role is split chiefly between being the Departmental administrative lead for research ethics and managing the Postgraduate Research and Graduate School administrative team. Before joining the Department for Continuing Education in November 2024, she completed a DPhil in History at the University of Oxford. Her research focused on King Charles II of England’s representation in colonial territories (1660-85).
Dr Sarah Frodsham
Co-Director of the Graduate School and Chair of Ethics
Sarah oversees the Graduate School’s training programme for postgradates and the Departmental Research Ethics Committee. She continues to work with Oxford Brookes University where she supervises students and teaches postgraduate research methodologies. Her PhD, obtained in 2018, focuses on creativity in primary science. She has a background in Structural Biology and has published extensively in her field. Read Sarah's full academic bio.
Sienna Wright
Course Administrator
Sienna has worked at the University of Oxford for four years and is currently an administrator in the Postgraduate Research Team and Graduate School within the Department for Continuing Education. She assists in supporting research ethics processes, helping research students to navigate ethical considerations in their work. Sienna is also involved in organising Research Development events. Outside of the University, she enjoys travelling, pottery, and long walks with her puppy.
