Sheila Tremlett is a Senior Associate Tutor at Oxford University’s Continuing Education Department, where she teaches modern British and European history. She has a special interest in political theory and the history of political ideas.

Britain was the leading global power of the 19th century. But has the widespread view of its declining role in the 20th century been exaggerated? Or did Britain prove more resilient to upheavals in the international order than 'declinist' theory suggests?
We shall explore why wars in the 20th and 21st centuries have tended to last longer, and to deliver less, than their original authors anticipated.
