Overview

This intensive online Project Management course will explore the nature of managing projects, focussing on the elements that every project manager needs to know and stay on top of.

Benefit shortfalls, cost overruns, and delays are common during project implementation and often projects are challenged from the beginning – this course will teach you how to overcome these challenges and deliver projects successfully.

Many best practice guides for project management focus on processes that each project must have. In this course we focus not on process but on key questions that have proven to be essential for projects large and small.

Organisations are seeking to increase efficiency and cut costs - how money is invested in projects is critical in the current challenging business environment.

Selecting, prioritizing and delivering the right projects that directly support the strategy of the organisation has never been more important. 

Key to this strategic objective is effective Project Management, a framework to ensure that investments in projects are delivered successfully and flexibly throughout the project lifecycle from idea through to delivery and close-out.  

In short, Project Management ensures organisations are fit for the future and this course will teach you how to improve the delivery of projects in your organisation.

Programme details

This course was designed and developed by the CPD Centre in conjunction with faculty from the University of Oxford's  Saïd Business School.

The course offers a condensed, yet comprehensive, overview of current and emerging best-practice methodologies and techniques for meeting the challenges of managing multiple, complex projects in a range of fields, such as construction, digital, technology, science, energy, defence and other sectors. 

Over the three sessions, you will be taken through the critical elements of project management:

Session 1 - Re-thinking project management

  • Defining your project scope

Session 2 - Key technical issues

  • Managing schedule
  • RAIDs (risks, assumptions, issues, dependencies)
  • Resources

Session 3 - People-power politics

  • Good project governance
  • Shaping human behaviour

Dates, Times and Delivery

The Project Management (online) course will run over three days, from 5 - 7 March 2024.

Sessions will be 90 minutes, delivered online via Microsoft Teams, from 10:30–12:00 (UK time).

This is a ‘virtual classroom’ course.

To replicate the experience of a classroom, the sessions are ‘live’ and are not recorded.

No attendance at Oxford is required and you do not need to purchase any software.

Accessing Your Online Course 

Details about accessing the private MS Teams course site will be emailed to you during the week prior to the course commencing.

Digital Certification

To complete the course, you will be required to attend and participate in all of the live sessions on the course in order to be considered for a certificate. Participants who complete the course will receive a link to download a University of Oxford digital certificate. Information on how to access this digital certificate will be emailed to you after the end of the course.

The certificate will show your name, the course title and the dates of the course you attended. You will also be able to download your certificate or share it on social media if you choose to do so.

Tutor

Ms Karlene Agard

Course Tutor

Karlene Agard is the Project X Research Fellow for the Value Theme A, based at the University of Oxford, Saïd Business School. She researches unexpected value in projects. Karlene has won academic and practitioner awards.

Karlene is reading for the Executive Masters in Major Programme Management at Saïd Business School. She completed an undergraduate degree in Engineering Business Management at the University of Warwick in 2009. Karlene has delivered guest lectures at the University of Warwick Business School and the University of Greenwich, and she speaks at conferences internationally.

As a Senior Consultant, she uses her risk and value expertise to help private and public organisations across the globe deliver projects successfully. She has written for Forbes, McKinsey, Deloitte and Entrepreneur, as well as risk, value and project management publications. Karlene was one of the youngest women to be appointed a Fellow of the Association for Project Management.

Prior to consulting, she worked for Network Rail, Transport for London and the House of Commons (UK Parliament). She enjoyed working on Crossrail 2, Thameslink and the International Trade Select Committee.

Level and demands

This course is designed specifically to benefit engineers, scientists, managers and other staff in large or small public and private sector organisations.

It is designed for those who have responsibility for project and programme management who want to improve their knowledge of the latest developments in this area. Some prior experience of project management is expected.

This course is delivered online using Microsoft Teams. You will be required to follow and implement the instructions we send you to fully access Microsoft Teams on the University of Oxford's secure IT network.

To participate you must be familiar with using a computer for purposes such as sending email and searching the Internet. You will also need regular access to the Internet and a computer meeting our recommended minimum computer specification.
It is advised to use headphones with working speakers and microphone.
