Overview

Lean Six Sigma is a highly regarded and well-proven approach to business process improvement.  

It is an approach that enables teams within the business to engage in continual improvement – working to make the business more effective and more efficient. It is employed extensively in manufacturing and increasingly in service businesses, including banks, financial services and healthcare. 

The Oxford Lean Six Sigma Green Belt (Online) course is a powerful first step to becoming a practitioner of business process improvement.  

The course introduces the many 'tools' of Lean Six Sigma and shows how these fit together into a framework for lasting and valuable change in organisations. 


The course provides maximum, useful, and actionable information.  

You will be introduced to a structure and method for dealing with issues of effectiveness and efficiency within your organisation and for fixing the problems that are identified. 

The course will teach you the key ways of thinking and problem solving for business process improvement.  

The Green Belt course will equip you to begin to practise Lean Six Sigma in your organisation and to affect significant and meaningful change.

Programme details

The Lean Six Sigma Green Belt (online) course is delivered in two components: 

          1. Twenty 90-minute online sessions, focused on practical skills and knowledge or improvement project execution, delivered live from Oxford. 

During this component, you will gain practical experience of improvement projects whilst working on an extended practical simulation task.  

You will be trained in new tools and techniques and then encouraged to apply them immediately in a practical fashion to the simulation.  

No prerequisite experience in business process improvement or Lean Six Sigma is required to complete this component of the course. 

          2. A self-paced distance-learning component focused on the analytical and statistical aspects of Six Sigma.  

The skills explored during this component of the course are best learnt in a self-paced manner that provides maximum flexibility for your individual learning style and previous experience.  

Many students will complete this element of the course in around four days of study – depending on previous experience and learning style, although it can be completed up to six weeks after the live sessions have finished. 

Dates, Times and Delivery 

The tutor led component of this course will be delivered live, from our broadcast studio, with opportunities to ask questions during the sessions, as well as via the online collaboration environment. 

The course is delivered over 20 x 90-minute sessions across 5 days. 

The course sessions take place each day from 09:00 - 17:00 (UK time).

This is a ‘virtual classroom’ course.

To replicate the experience of a classroom, the sessions are ‘live’ and are not recorded.

No attendance at Oxford is required and you do not need to purchase any software. 

Tutorial Fees

The fee for this course is £1,495.

Places are subject to availability, with classes limited to 16 people. 

Digital Certification

To complete the course, you will be required to attend and participate in all of the live sessions on the course in order to be considered for a certificate. Participants who complete the course will receive a link to download a University of Oxford digital certificate. Information on how to access this digital certificate will be emailed to you after the end of the course.

The certificate will show your name, the course title and the dates of the course you attended. You will also be able to download your certificate or share it on social media if you choose to do so.

Dr Rob Collins

Visiting Fellow

Department of Computer Science, University of Oxford

Dr Rob Collins is a visiting fellow of Kellogg College Oxford and regularly teaches courses at the University – both through Continuing Professional Development and through the Computing Laboratory.

As well as his academic teaching work Dr Collins regularly provides consultancy to industry in the area of Business Process Excellence and Systems Engineering.  He gained his Black Belt Certification in Lean Six Sigma from Lockheed Martin – the world's largest Systems Engineering company and a world-leader in advanced technology.

As well as his undergraduate degree in Physics and Computing, Dr Collins holds a PhD completed within a Psychology Department. Dr Collins’ PhD focussed on training, psychology and processes for introducing complex technology into learning environments. Dr Collins’ completed an MBA in 2012 at Henley Business School. He thus has a strategic business view as well as deep understanding and practical experience of hands-on process improvement in technology and service.

IT requirements

This course is delivered online using Microsoft Teams. You will be required to follow and implement the instructions we send you to fully access Microsoft Teams on the University of Oxford's secure IT network.

To participate you must be familiar with using a computer for purposes such as sending email and searching the Internet. You will also need regular access to the Internet and a computer meeting our recommended minimum computer specification.
It is advised to use headphones with working speakers and microphone.
