Creation Stories: The Ancient Near East

Overview

Cultures around the world have also told stories about the origin of the universe and of the human race itself. Creation can be viewed as a peaceful process or as the result of violent struggle. It can be the work of a single deity or of many gods and goddesses. Some of the oldest stories we know come from the Ancient Near-East including the lands of Egypt, Mesopotamia and Canaan/Israel.

This day school will examine these stories and look for both common factors and for specific cultural and environmental factors that helped to shape them. Come and explore how “In the beginning” was envisaged and the depths of insight latent within the texts.
