DPhil Induction - 2023

The induction schedule for new DPhil Students in the Department for Continuing Education can be found below. Sessions will be conducted in-person in Rewley House, Oxford, and simultaneously streamed via MS Teams. Sessions will also be recorded for those unable to attend in-person or ‘live’ online. (Note: this programme may be updated at intervals ahead of the induction itself.)

Day 1 – Wednesday 11 October 2023: LECTURE THEATRE

08.45:  Welcome and register (Reception, Rewley House) - introductions and refreshments in the Common Room

09.15: Session 1: Welcome to the department - Director of the Department, Professor Matthew Weait and Director of Graduate Studies for Research Students (DGS-R), Professor David Griffiths

10.00: Session 2: Research integrity and ethics – Chair of DREC, Professor Matthew Weait

10.45: Break – refreshments available in the Common Room

11.15:  Session 3: Welcome to the Graduate School (training and development) - Directors of the Graduate School, Dr Sarah Frodsham and Dr Alistair Beecher

12.30:  Lunch  

13.30:  Session 4: Introduction to the department’s research – Director of Research, Professor Tom Buchannan 

14.00:  Session 5: Critical thinking - thinking like a researcher – DGS-R, Professor David Griffiths

15.00:  Break – refreshments available in the Common Room

15.30:  Session 6: The student perspective: hearing from your peers about the DPhil experience (discussion event) - three current DPhils will be available to chat and answer your questions 

18.00  Drinks then dinner at 18.30 hrs (Rewley House)

14.30–16.30: Graduate Studies Office – drop-in for questions
